'We're a' doomed!'
Feared by some, welcomed by others, the end is, apparently, nigh. This premiere exhibition presents the work of several international artists who have in some sense explored ideas about the end of the world, apocalypse, finality, the death of thought, or related eschatological concerns.
Includes prints and other media by Jake and Dinos Chapman, Gordon Cheung, Damien Hirst, and Andy Warhol, among others, plus a range of older historical images.
This exhibition is curated by Norman and Sarah-Manning Shaw and is part of Edinburgh Art Festival 2012

The Chapman Brothers and others as inspiration.

Block Printing Workshop

Taking the apocalyptic theme of the exhibition 'Cheer Up! It's not the end of the world…' as inspiration, print your own doomsday message using this rough and ready old poster medium.

Talk by Kevin Whitesides
2012 Invades Popular Culture: Mayans, Memes, and the End of a World Era

Apocalyptic culture researcher Kevin Whitesides will give a talk about the 2012 phenomenon and its history, interpretations, and artifacts. Kevin is currently a postgraduate student in Religious Studies at the University of Edinburgh completing a dissertation on cultural transmission in the 2012 apocalyptic milieu. He has published and presented widely on the 2012 phenomenon in the academic world and contributed an article on the 'End of the World Buffet' for the March 2012 issue of Fortean Times.

Lift Access

The old goods lift at 100 Eastvale Place has been lovingly restored over the last few months giving easy access to all three upper levels. Resident artists and clients of the photography studio and venue can now drive into the building and load all equipment directly into the lift avoiding the painful ascend of the front stairwell. This also means that the entire buiding is now accesible to disabled artists and audience members.

In the shadow of the magnificent steel structured Forth Rail Bridge lies an uninhabited rocky islet named Inchgarvie. Once providing isolated refuge for syphilis victims, later a prison and quarantine for plague victims and during the First and Second World Wars fending off air and submarine attacks, the island is today the ruinous concrete home to colonies of seabirds. Fulmars, herons and cormorants migrate to nest here over the summer, their wheeling, diving, squawking and excreting of guano prohibit human access through a fierce occupation of the land.

Bobby Niven's ISLAND project takes this landmark and expands its cultural location by utilising prop, moving image, artefact and sculpture in order to build a narrative that stretches the time and landscape of the film. It peels away a history of psychic layers and employs the island's entropic materiality as a means to transport the viewer through a bodily experience.
The exhibition consists of three parts: the film, the grey room filled with quiet monumental sculptures and the orange room screeching with inert birdlike depictions.

Similar renderings were sculpted in Niven's studio and transported to the island where he installed them, like offerings, in exchange for making his film. He returned with flotsam, jetsam, bird bones and objects washed ashore from the busy shipping lane and the Sisyphean task of repainting the bridge.

Gallery Curator 2012-14

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Camille Le Houezec & Joey Villemont as SWG3 Gallery Curator for this period and we are very excited to work with them on delivering their programme, which they have been developing over the last few months.
Commencing in September with 'The Quid', a solo show by Glasgow-based artist Owen Piper, which previews on September 14th the post has been extended from 15 months to 2 years.

Le Houezec & Villemont, who have completed an MA in France and the MFA course at Glasgow School of Art respectively; will continue their curatorial project IOP [It's Our Playground] alongside their exhibition programme at SWG3.

Following the success of Music is the Music Language last September - which saw over 30 acts perform across numerous stages and venues centered around SWG3 - independent promoters Cry Parrot and Tracer Trails are teaming up again to bring you a sequel - Music Language.

Music Language will take place across numerous venues in Glasgow on Saturday the 1st of September and Sunday the 2nd. On Saturday we'll be moving between The 78's vegan cafe/bar and SWG3's awesome renovated warehouse space, while on Sunday we go Southside, with live music in community centre Kinning Park Complex and country western-themed social club The Grand Ole Opry. For each day we'll be organizing some outdoor generator-powered guerilla gigs, as well as an afterparty each night - keep your eyes peeled for announcements.

Early-bird weekend tickets are available now for just £8. At the end of June this will jump up to £10 for a weekend pass or £6 for a day pass.
