Introducing our new season of research on belief, Douglas Trumbull's 1983 film recalls the tale of scientists who invent a technology that enables the experiences of one person to be recorded and played back in the mind of another.

Christopher Walken & Natalie Wood star in this race to confront the "scariest thing any of us will ever face" whilst the Military do their utmost to thwart them at every stage and develop their own nefarious uses for 'The Hat'.

2012 marks the centenary of the birth of Alan Turing, regarded by many as the originator of modern computing. The T100 Twittest is based on the 'Turing Test' for artificial intelligence - re-imagined for the social media generation.

Twitter is perfect for this test as twitterers may not be who they claim to be: human, robot or Paris Hilton? To a background of wartime jazz from the Bill Fleming Quartet, the audience will have the chance to try the game.

Each muse has been drawn from the fields of science or technology. Teams will produce catwalk ready ensembles for or inspired by them. They will have just one weekend and only the materials and machines provided.

Join us at LateLab for catwalk and cocktails and an extra special screening of 'Bill Cunningham New York', a cinematic profile of the noted veteran photographer revealing his remarkable passion for faith and fashion.

Doug Fishbone exhibition at HICA - 1 April - 6 May

Doug Fishbone
Neither Here nor There

1 April – 6 May 2012

Neither Here nor There, an exhibition by Doug Fishbone, will open at the Highland Institute for Contemporary Art on Sunday 1 April, 2012, 2-5pm.

Neither Here nor There brings together two recent video works by the London based conceptual artist Doug Fishbone that extend his examination of consumer culture, mass media and the relativity of perception and understanding. Elmina and Untitled (Hypno Project) both question the way information is processed and presented in the contemporary visual landscape, and undermine the relationship between audience, meaning and context in different ways.

Elmina, a new feature-length melodrama which was shot in Ghana with a cast of major Ghanaian celebrities and scripted by leading local production team Revele Films, offers an unexpected hybrid of the contemporary art world and the West African popular film industry. What allows it to cross over is the presence of Fishbone, a white man from New York, in the lead of an otherwise completely African film – a part that would normally be played by a black West African actor. Released as both a limited edition art work for a Western art-world audience and an inexpensive DVD for mainstream African and African immigrant markets, Elmina upends conventional notions of value, authorship and celebrity, defying any single identity or reading.

In Untitled (Hypno Project), twelve protagonists are filmed as they watch a short video under the influence of hypnosis, each having been given specific suggestions instructing them to respond in certain ways at different visual and aural cues. Their reactions to what they watch unfold with a curious but humourous tension, raising a broad range of questions about manipulation, propaganda and behavioral conditioning in our media-saturated visual and political environment.

Fishbone's solo exhibitions include Tate Britain, London (2010-11), Rokeby, London (2010-11, and 2009), Gimpel Fils, London (2006) and 30,000 Bananas in Trafalgar Square (2004). Group exhibitions include Rude Britannia: British Comic Art, Tate Britain (2010), Busan Biennale, Busan, South Korea (2008); Laughing in a Foreign Language, Hayward Gallery (2008), London; British Art Show 6, Newcastle, Bristol, Nottingham and Manchester (2006). He performs regularly at both international and UK venues, including appearances at London's ICA and Southbank Centre.

The exhibition runs from 1 April – 6 May, and is open on Sundays 2 - 5pm, or by appointment.

17 March - 21 April 2012
Opens 17 March, 11am - 1pm

Alec Finlay is an artist, poet and publisher whose work crosses a range of media and forms, from sculpture and collage, to audio-visual, neon and new technologies. Born in Scotland in 1966 and currently based in Newcastle, England, much of Finlay's work reflects on our interaction with nature and considers how we as a culture, or cultures, relate to landscape.

Finlay describes his work as microtonal, combining a number of smaller elements within a wider field, drawing frequently on innovative poetic forms. He often works collaboratively, weaving together art and text to create generous experimental works, some mapped directly onto the landscape, others woven into the fabric of our social selves. For this exhibition, Finlay will install a new five part poem-object accompanied by an artist's book with specially written essay, published in an edition of 250.

Recent and future projects include The Road North (2010/2011), a contemporary word map of Scotland across a year long journey through its landscape, and a major new commission for the 18th Sydney Biennale to be launched in June 2012.

Opening Event
Private View: Saturday 17 March, 11am-1pm. All welcome.
At 12 noon, Alec Finlay will read from his new publication, Question your teaspoons, a collection of poems inspired by his "Stonypathian memories."
