LeithLate is a free Leith-based art event happening on Thursday 16th June, co-inciding with the Leith Festival. LeithLate is one huge art opening, with a strong emphasis on visual art and music, but encompassing film, poetry and dance, across 10 venues situated on and around the top half of Leith Walk, most of whom are staying open late in order to participate. LeithLate is spread across 5 art venues and 5 local businesses, with 3 brand new exhibition openings taking place during the course of the event. The event itself runs between 6pm and 8pm, during which time participants are invited to move around the route, partaking in some of Leith's finest creative offerings, and then culminates in the LeithLate afterparty at Pilrig St Pauls Church, lasting from 8pm to 11pm (entrance fee to the afterparty is £4). The Skinny is printing a route map that reflects all participating venues, designed by local artist David Lemm, plus a preview of the event in the June edition of the magazine. LeithLate: 10 venues, 2 hours, 1 afterparty! All the venues taking part in LeithLate, and their corresponding events are as follows:
Whitespace Gallery, 11 Gayfield Square. Whitespace is a new venue in Edinburgh that provides a space for various classes and exhibitions organised by artist Leigh Chorlton. The venue will host a new exhibition by Keith Farquhar, whose flat-pack paintings of nudes have been recently shown at Studio Voltaire in London, Tramway in Glasgow, and Gio Marconi in Milan.
Superclub, 11a Gayfield Square. Superclub is an artist-run collective based in Edinburgh Scotland, whose headquarters at 11a Gayfield Square are home to Superclub studios, gallery and shop. Superclub is proud to present Of Form And Growth, an exhibition of paintings by Alex Gibbs, showcasing his continually growing series of small scale, semi fictional paintings, developed most recently during a residency in Beijing.
Windsor Buffet, 45 Elm Row. Recently under new management, the Windsor Buffet is a welcome addition to Leith Walk's ever expanding list of good boozeries. There will be live music and DJs performing on the night of LeithLate.
Such and Such, 105 Brunswick Street. Such and Such is an independent, artist run studio and exhibition space. As part of LeithLate they present Anomal, an exhibition exploring hypnagogic autonomous landscapes by recent Duncan of Jordanstone Illustration graduates Al White and Jamie Johnson.
The Old Ambulance Depot, 77 Brunswick Street. The Old Ambulance Depot is a unique space that regularly hosts exhibitions and events. As part of LeithLate, HUNTED PROJECTS present a solo exhibition by Charlie Anderson, a painter whose work is reminiscent of the weathered, layered effect of street advertising and billboards.
Word of Mouth Café, 3A Albert Street. Since 2007, Word of Mouth has been serving good food at excellent prices. The café regularly hosts special events and during LeithLate is showcasing a poetry-music-film performance by Zorras, plus breakdancing by Edinburgh Mela project Shared Territories followed by an Artachat discussion.
Pilrig St Pauls Church, 1A Pilrig Street. Pilrig St Pauls is home to the LeithLate afterparty running from 8pm till 11pm on the night of the event. The lineup is as follows: Sara and the Snakes, PET, HRH and The John Knox Sex Club. There will be a donations bar available. Entrance is £4, all proceeds go to the bands, artists and people who made LeithLate happen. Come along and show your support!
Tourmalet, 25 Buchanan Street. The Tourmalet, named after a section of the Tour de France, is an eccentric friendly local that specializes in German wheat beer. The Tourmalet will be putting on a special exhibition of Shaver's Weekly covers for LeithLate. Pick up your Royal Wedding Commemorative Edition of Shaver's Weekly while you're in!
Brass Monkey Leith, 362 Leith Walk. The newly opened Brass Monkey Leith is roomy yet cosy, and has a great selection of beers and ales (& monkey pizzas!). It will be screening a selection of short films curated by Future Shorts Edinburgh during LeithLate.
Elvis Shakespeare, 347 Leith Walk. Elvis Shakespeare are specialist dealers in rare vinyl and quality literature, and committed to the promotion of writers and musicians. They regularly host live performances in the shop at weekends, all free of charge. For LeithLate, there will be an exhibition installation, plus live performances from Wounded Knee, Little Pebble, Blueflint and Withered Hand.
The Out of the Blue Drill Hall, 36 Dalmeny Street. Out of the Blue provide studio and production space with 73 artists/creative industries in 68 studios, a licensed café and regular artistic events all housed in this converted building. As part of LeithLate, OOTB will be extending their opening hours to 7.30pm to allow entry to their latest exhibition, showcasing the work of artists working from studios at The Out of the Blue Drill Hall and Portobello Powerhouse.
LeithLate is a celebration of Leith's vibrant cultural community. It is hoped that, if successful, LeithLate will become a regular annual event, so please support this project by talking about it in print and to your friends, coming along on the night, and of course, attending the LeithLate afterparty.
