Invitation: Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Research

EVENING RECEPTION: TUESDAY 4TH NOVEMBER 2008 AT 6.30
Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art Archive,
Special Books Collection and Reference Library

From Keith Hartley
Chief Curator & Deputy Director

As you may know, the Archive, Special Books Collection and Reference Library of the Gallery of Modern Art provide a superb resource for research. The Archive contains over 98 major holdings with particular strengths in Dada & Surrealism, British Modernism and Scottish Art and Artists. The Special Books collection comprises over 11,000 rare books and books by artists dating from the late 19th century to the present day. The Reference Library has over 50,000 books and exhibition catalogues, as well as art journals, videos, CD ROMs etc.

We would like to encourage you and those studying at your institution to make use of our resources, either as individuals or in pre-arranged study groups. Group visits in particular can offer a unique opportunity to view original artwork in the context of supporting primary source material. Sessions can be tailored to meet specific needs.

In order to raise awareness of the resources available to the academic community, we will be holding an evening event focusing on the archive, special books and reference library collections. We would be delighted if you and your colleagues were able to join us at 6.30 in the Dean Gallery on Tuesday 4 November.

Refreshments will be served in the Penrose Gallery and there will be a brief introduction to the collections, followed by an opportunity to see some of the highlights of our Special Collections, the Reading Room and the Book Stacks. There will also be an opportunity to discuss the Gallery’s future exhibition programme with our curators.

If you would like to attend please contact our Archive & Library Assistant, Kirstie Meehan on 0131 624 6268 or at kmeehan@nationalgalleries.org by 31 October.
