Events: Artists Talk & Sierra Metro 1st Birthday Party: Thursday 1 October 7pm

With an interest in the boundaries and analogies commonly drawn between animal and man, Nieuwenhuizen's practice investigates the realms of shamanistic and arcane ritual and behaviour. Using video, sculpture, drawing and photography to address the domestic, sacred, repulsive and seductive aspects of the animal industries, this new body of work generates an unsettling psychological parallel.

In the most important times in our existence we try to make sense of our place and time by cutting up the past and re-ordering the future.
At the turn of the 20th century collage and assemblage came to the fore as a legitimate means of visual and cultural expression. The lineage of this act of creative destruction can be traced to the invention of paper in China in 200BC but it was the rise of Modernism that necessitated a technique, which took the pre-existing: the already, and tore, cut and slashed it before it was re-proposed giving rise to new understanding and meaning.
The artists who feature in CUT/PASTE have graduated during the most turbulent and uncertain of times. Nearly a full century since Picasso and Braque re-defined collage by taking the subject of the café and colliding it with the surface of the painting they are acutely aware of the contextual past & present and do not shy away or hide from it.

Street Level Photoworks : News Update 14 : Sept 09

Update 14 Masthead

In Search of Space header

In Search of Space is a series of talks and events exploring the ethos and legacy of the 60s counter-culture, its various social and cultural experiments and their legacy. It has been programmed to coincide with the exhibition 'Taking Liberties' by John 'Hoppy' Hopkins and features an exciting range of contributors.

Panel Discussion:
Andy Roberts, Stewart Home and George Robertson
Saturday 19th September 3 - 5pm. Free
At Street Level. Trongate 103
Part of Doors Open Day

This informative discussion will cover the hidden past of LSD in Britain, the 1960s counter-culture of art, drugs and mysticism, the roots of the underground and the influence of the International Times in Scotland.

Street Level are pleased to welcome writer Andy Roberts, who will give an illustrated talk around his book 'Albion Dreaming: a popular history of LSD in Britain' and artist Stewart Home who will comment on various London counter-cultural scenes involving his mother, the beatnik and model Julia Callan-Thompson. George Robertson will share his experiences of distributing the International Times from his base in Aberdeen and the recuperation of psychedelia.

For further info on the talks click here.

For info and images on 'Taking Liberties' click here.

Book Covers

About The Panelists:

Andy Roberts is an author, journalist and researcher, whose books include 'The UFO's That Never Were (with Jenny Randles and Dr David Clarke) which explores society's fascination with UFO's, and 'Ghosts and Legends of Yorkshire' which deal with folklore. He writes for the Guradian, has a monthly column in Fortean Times, and has provided research for several TV and radio programmes dealing with UFO's and the supernatural, including being a consultant for 'Britain's X-Files', broadcast on BBC2.

Stewart Home was born in south London in 1962. When he was sixteen he held down a factory job for a few months, an experience that led him to vow he'd never work again. After dabbling in rock journalism and music, in the early eighties he switched his attention to the art world. Now Home writes novels as well as cultural commentary, and he continues to make films and exhibitions. He has written too many works of fiction to mention here, and some of his influential non-fiction includes 'The Assault on Culture: Utopian Currents from Lettrisme to Class War', and 'Cranked Up Really High', Home's reconstruction of punk rock in the light of Hegel.

George Robertson describes himself as a 'peripatetic intellectual'. In 1967 he was one of only 4 outlets in Scotland for IT. In Aberdeen, he was receiving underground missives from, among others, Project Sigma, King Mob, Gustav Metzger, John Latham, Ray Johnson. Later in 67 he moved to London to become one of the dancers in the psychedelic maelstrom. In the 80's, he wrote 'The Situationists and its Penetration into British Culture' and edited the 'Futures' series of books (Routledge).

Following the success of last year's Artists' Book & Zine Fair at Spike Island we're doing it again! The date this time is Hallowe'en, Saturday 31st October 2009. The fair will take place in Gallery Two at Spike Island and will be open from 1 - 6pm, with the intention being to continue with music in the Spike Café until 9pm.

I'm currently inviting artists/illustrators/collectives to come down and have a stall at the fair; I hope you'll be able to take part. There is no charge for a table at the Spike Island Artists' Book & Zine Fair, and no entry charge for the public. A light buffet lunch will be provided for all stall-holders.

The attitude of the fair at Spike Island is to bring together different approaches to a multiple such as a book or zine and, to consider how and where they sit in relation to an art practice. As such we'll have a central space within Gallery 2 that will be used for readings, demonstrations, discussions, etc and are keen for stall-holders to take part in this element of the day, so please let me know if you'd like to do something.

Let me know your thoughts and if you have any questions. You can visit the Spike Island website for more information about what goes on here, wwwspikeisland.org.uk, the autumn exhibition in Gallery One will be Sonia Boyce Like Love - a print based show of new work.

I look forward to hearing from you.

ten til ten - Carla Scott Fullerton: Cut Line

15 August - 5 September 2009, Thu-Sat 12 - 5pm

Carla Scott Fullerton's practice is shaped by an interest in architecture: its history, materials and function. Her sensitivity to materials and awareness of the status and economy attached to their use forms the nucleus of a process of instinctive exploration composed of drawing and sculpture, each separate yet one often informing the other.

For this exhibition Scott Fullerton has extended this relationship in new works which explore the drawn line / form within sculpture. Using materials often associated with the underlying structure of building, or with temporary surfaces, she has created different textural and linear configurations, cutting into the surface of plywood and sterling panels to reveal their underlying textures. The collaged graph paper recalls the initial planning and placing of shape and line, and, through its repetitive patterning, frames the physical process present in the making of the work.

Location: 16 Eastvale Place, Glasgow
