1. SMALL SOCIETY LAB///

This lunchtime conversation event will explore the link between building communities and music, led by the Mercury Prize nominated musician Kenny Anderson (AKA King Creosote).
King Creosote has long worked in and for his community in Fife. His songs come from a deep connection to the people, the place and the environment that is pretty much unique to the East Neuk. Kenny is at home in his community and regularly organises events, music nights, festivals and arts happenings that provide an enormous sense of identity and value to the people that live their lives in this remote part of the UK. It's telling that when he was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2011, he spent more on-air time talking up the East Neuk than he did promoting his work (which may explain why he only came 2nd). Kenny's passion and commitment to the people that he lives with is unique and inspirational – but this is not a smooth path with a local red-carpet laid at his feet. This is the East Neuk where people are, well, from the East Neuk and that is a great place to start a story about a musician who's audience is the people he can see and not those at the end of a Facebook page.
The Small Society Lab is an annual event at Visual Research Centre, a partnership between DCA and DJCAD, University of Dundee
Throughout June, the Small Society Lab will bring together artists, designers, scientists, community activists and members of the great Dundonian public to explore ideas that exist on the boundaries of art, science and community. A series of one-day events will explore specific themes, and will include engaging presentations by our informed Lab Leaders and hands-on workshops. Participants can join us for a social event on the VRC patio afterwards.
This event is free but ticketed, please book in advance to avoid disappointment. Reserved your place by calling DCA Box Office on 01382 909900. Find out more on the SSL website : http://smallsocietylab.dundee.ac.uk/

1. EXHIBITION/// Coded Chimera
Until 16 June, Mon - Fri 9.30 - 8.30 Sat 9.30 - 4.30
Tower Foyer Gallery
An exhibition showcasing the results of an AHRC-funded research project by sculptor Bruce Gernand from Central St Martins (part of the University of the Arts London), exploring the ideas of morphogenesis (the study of biological dynamics) pioneered by D'Arcy Thompson. Using digital scans of zoological specimens and customised computer software tools, different animal forms are morphed to create hybrid shapes. The sculptures, models and diagrams shown in the exhibition (which was first staged at the University of Cambridge last year) make connections between the process of sculpture and the principles of biological dynamics.
This is one of two exhibitions being staged as part of a two-year project for the University of Dundee Museum Services to build a collection of art inspired by D'Arcy Thompson, funded by the Art Fund's RENEW scheme.

2. EXHIBITION/// Heresies
Until 16 June, Mon - Fri 9.30 - 8.30 Sat 9.30 - 4.30
Lamb Gallery
Three artists present their own responses to the collections in the D'Arcy Thompson Zoology Museum and to D'Arcy's ideas and writings. Professor Roger Wilson (Head of Fine Art at the Glasgow School of Art) has invited fellow artists B E Cole and Stuart MacKenzie to join him in an exhibition called Heresies, a term D'Arcy himself used to describe the controversial theories that he would publish in his seminal work On Growth and Form. The artists employ different media and approaches but share a common interest in landscape and the forms that arise from it. All three employ close observation of natural form and extensive experimentation leading to the generation of forms which, they hope, will add to our visual language and our relationship with science and the natural world.
This is one of two exhibitions being staged as part of a two-year project for the University of Dundee Museum Services to build a collection of art inspired by D'Arcy Thompson, funded by the Art Fund's RENEW scheme.

1. EXHIBITION/// This Production - Scott Myles
Until 10 June 2012
This is the first major UK solo show for the Dundee born and educated artist Scott Myles, marking 15 years since he graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. This Production features an exciting mix of new works including an expansive site-specific installation, new sculpture and prints made in the DCA Print Studio.
Displaced Façade (for DCA)is a dramatic new large-scale installation made from bricks that references architecture and personal memory. While living in Dundee in the 1990s, Myles regularly skateboarded in the then derelict building that came to be re-developed into DCA. Known locally as 'The Factory', the abandoned building was used as an unofficial skate-park before it was acquired for re-development in 1995 and the bare brick walls were subsequently clad in preparation for the building's transformation into today's art centre. Displaced Façade (for DCA) is realised with the generous support of Ibstock Brick Ltd.
Alongside this ambitious installation will be a number of other recent pieces including Analysis (Mirror) a new sculpture consisting of two mirrored bus shelters upturned one upon the other.
Scott Myles was born in Dundee in 1975 and currently lives and works in Glasgow. He has exhibited widely across Europe and North America and his works are held in public collections including Tate, London; MoMA, New York; Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh; and GoMA, Glasgow.

EXHIBITION/// Infinite Jest - Cinthia Marcelle, Rob Pruitt, William Mackrell
23 June - 26 August
Candles, choc-chip cookies and scrunched up pieces of paper are among the materials employed by the three artists in our summer exhibition Infinite Jest. Cinthia Marcelle, Rob Pruitt and William Mackrell are each fascinated by circular narration, infinite loops and möbius strips. This exhibition is an intricate braid of their work, the title of which has been taken from the complex and gargantuan novel Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace.
Cinthia Marcelle (b. 1974, Belo Horizonte, Brazil) uses video, collage, painting and photography to document the effects of her interventions, which introduce coincidences and connections to everyday situations. Her work was recently exhibited to considerable acclaim at both Tate Modern and the New Museum in New York, and she received the Pinchuk Prize in 2010.
Rob Pruitt (b.1964, Washington DC) is one of the USA's best known contemporary artists. Infinite Jest features several of his most playful works:Esprit de Corps (pictured below), Pop-Pop's Chocolate-Chip Cookies and one of his signature mineral water fountains. Esprit de Corps is constructed from blue jeans filled with concrete and joined together to create sculptural representations of mathematical concepts.
William Mackrell (b. 1983, London) is a young artist equally fascinated by the sublime and the absurd. With 1000 Candles he exhibits a full circle of tea light candles: showing them unlit, as potential; lit, as performative object; and as a remnant.

1. EXHIBITION/// At Play 4
21 April - 17 June 2012)
South Hill Park, Bracknell, UK.
At Play 4 is an invitation to the spectator to play – with an active sense of freedom similar to a child at play. This finale of At Play exhibition explores play that is free and spontaneous or bound by rules and conventions. At Play 4 considers rules, or the lack of them, and the spirit of the Olympics. The exhibition examines play as a way of surviving boredom and of discovering the insecurity of the world, and the effect of random chance. It relates play to drawing – perhaps the most direct and free form of artistic expression. At Play reminds us of how we played as children.
Artists include Leszek Blyszczynski, Andi Chapple, James R Ford, Flora Gare, Rebecca Glover, Nick Kennedy, Philip Lee, Dan Lovelace, Sousan Luqman, Nyeema Morgan, Martina O'Shea, Katherina Radeva, Guy Tarrant, Cally Trench, Kim Walker and Mary Yacoob. At Play is curated and produced by Outi Remes and Cally Trench.
The gallery is open Thursday to Saturday 1-5pm and Sunday 1-5pm.    http://www.southhillpark.org.uk/?lid=7097
