eca research seminar series

music as design: graphics and the music of Iannis Xenakis

Professor Peter Nelson, Music, University of Edinburgh

Mycenae Alpha, Iannis Xenakis

In this seminar composer Peter Nelson will examine the creative processes of
the Greek composer, architect and informatics pioneer, Iannis Xenakis. He
will focus on the work created for the UPIC: the computer-based music design
system devised by Xenakis in the 1970s. In particular he will consider how
drawing practices and musical images come together in a unique creative
environment, producing works which cross the boundary between sight and
sound.

Peter Nelson is Professor of Music and Technology at the University of
Edinburgh. He was an associate of les Ateliers UPIC in Paris during the
1980s and worked closely with Xenakis.
