Co-design of digital media as a model for cultural enquiry

Dr Mark Wright
Research Fellow, School of Informatics and Edinburgh College of Art

The cultural significance of technology is its power to transform being, meaning and practice.

How can we establish a meaningful relationship between the Arts and Humanities with Science and Technology and what form might that take? An appropriate methodology to engage with creative practice is the co-design of media based on informatic principles applying user centered design, ethnomethodology and "research by design" together with conventional HCI and cognitive experiments. This talk provides an overview of how we came to develop this methodology and it is illustrated with a number of examples of collaboration and development of new digital media exploring questions covering design media, new models of narrative and the evolution of human encounter in real, virtual and mixed reality spaces.
